The SM7dB takes the SM7B — long a standard in broadcast and podcast vocal recording for its smooth, forgiving cardioid response and heavy off-axis rejection — and adds a switchable internal preamp. Dynamic microphones like the SM7B have low output by design, which historically meant pairing them with a dedicated inline preamp (a Cloudlifter or similar) to get a clean, hiss-free signal out of an audio interface with limited gain on tap. The SM7dB folds that gain stage into the mic itself, selectable at +18 dB or +28 dB, or bypassable entirely to behave exactly like a standard SM7B.

This matters most for interfaces or mixers that don’t have high-gain preamps built in — a common bottleneck for anyone stepping up from a consumer USB mic to a broadcast dynamic. The mic still needs 48V phantom power to run the internal preamp electronics, so it isn’t a passive dynamic anymore in that respect, even though the capsule and polar pattern are unchanged from the SM7B.
